The Oeko-Tex 100 Standard focuses on and regulates the use of undue chemical residues and in particular endocrine disrupting compounds or EDC’s.
The endocrine system is the system of glands, organs and tissues that secrete hormones into the bloodstream. Hormones are chemical messengers that are critical to many body processes, including growth, development, metabolism and sexual differentiation. Some chemicals can block normal hormonal function in animals and humans alike. This process is called endocrine disruption.
The two most prominent chemicals which have been identified as having endocrine disruptive potential are alkylphenols (APs), and their polyethoxylated derivatives, alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs). These chemicals are regulated by the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and only products complying to its strict requirements will be approved.
